It would be nice to see an improvement in the performance of the OpenVPN protocol. Still, the manual configuration of OpenVPN did fix my issue—plus, the VPN worked well while using the WireGuard protocol.

Additionally, Surfshark VPN offers a bundle called “One,” which you can add to your subscription for $1.49/month. You will be billed $38.74 for the first 26 months and $17.88 annually (still $1.49/month). The bundle includes an antivirus, a real-time security alert, and a private search engine. Your traffic is secured with high-grade 256-bit encryption, the same encryption level governments and banks use to protect sensitive data. It’s currently regarded as uncrackable since it would take billions of years for even the fastest computers to decode.
The VPN supports OpenVPN and WireGuard, considered today’s most secure protocols. However, while testing Surfshark VPN, I found that some things do not work properly.
I was disconnected from my Wi-Fi several times while trying to connect to a server using the OpenVPN protocol. This happened with both the TCP and UDP ports of OpenVPN, but I never experienced that with WireGuard.
OpenVPN is one of the most popular security protocols, even among Linux users. I didn’t have issues while using it with other VPN services, so I was surprised it didn’t work well.
I contacted live chat support, and the chatbot automatically suggested a troubleshooting method. After clicking on it, I was immediately switched to a real agent and provided with a manual VPN configuration method, which fixed my issue.
Surfshark VPN also has a Camouflage mode that automatically runs when you use OpenVPN. This obfuscation method makes your VPN connection look like regular traffic. It can help you bypass VPN blocks, as your ISP and the websites you visit won’t be able to tell you’re using a VPN at all.
WireGuard is known for being faster than OpenVPN while providing robust security. The protocol showed exceptional performance during my tests, allowing me to experience Surfshark seamlessly for all activities without issues.
Surfshark was established in the British Virgin Islands, but since 2021, the VPN has been registered in and has operated out of the Netherlands. It also has offices in Vilnius (Lithuania) and Warsaw (Poland).
The British Virgin Islands don’t have any data-retention laws, so I was disappointed to see the VPN move its headquarters to the Netherlands, part of the Nine Eyes Alliance (also part of the Fourteen Eyes Alliance).
The Nine Eyes Alliance is a group of countries that monitor their residents and share intelligence with each other. If Surfshark VPN received a court order from one of these countries to hand over your data, it would be obligated to comply.
However, Surfshark VPN maintains a strict no-logs policy and doesn’t collect any information that could reveal your identity or your online activity. It clearly states:
We do not collect any information about what you do online (your visited IP addresses, browsing history, session information, used bandwidth, connection time stamps, network traffic, or any other similar information).
After reading the entire privacy policy, I found that Surfshark VPN collects only some aggregated performance data, like diagnostics information, crash reports, and unsuccessful connection attempts. That information doesn’t contain identifiable data that could harm your privacy. Therefore, I recommend Surfshark VPN as a privacy-friendly VPN service.
To verify the reliability of its server infrastructure, Surfshark commissioned two independent audit reports, the first in 2018 and the second in 2021. Cure53, a German cybersecurity firm, carried both out, and the outcome confirmed Surfshark’s solid and secure status.
Surfshark has a reliable kill switch that prevents data leaks by disconnecting you from the internet if your VPN connection drops. When you establish a VPN connection, it will automatically connect you back to your network.
A kill switch is necessary to secure your data in case of unexpected connection issues. For example, your data might get exposed when switching between networks or your device enters sleep mode.
Surfshark gives you the choice between two kill switch modes: Soft and Strict. The Soft mode only turns off your internet connection if disconnected from your VPN. The Strict mode does the same but activates the kill switch if you get disconnected or your VPN connection is interrupted.
Surfshark’s kill switch is in the app’s settings and on the VPN’s main window, right under the flag of the country you’re connected to.
Surfshark offers a split tunneling feature called Bypasser, which you can find in the settings. Essentially, split tunneling lets you choose which internet traffic you want to route through the VPN while the rest of your traffic uses a regular internet connection. This feature has a few additional options with Surfshark.
There are two categories: apps and websites/IPs. Under apps, you can turn on “Route via VPN” or “Bypass VPN.” These function as an allowlist and blocklist. You can’t turn on both at the same time.
If you enable the “Route via VPN” option, you can create a list of apps that the VPN will protect while the rest of your traffic goes through your regular IP. This can be helpful if you want to torrent safely without sacrificing speeds for other activities like streaming or listening to music.
The “Bypass VPN” option lets you choose which apps to access directly using your IP address. Similarly, you can select websites or IP addresses you want to leave out of the VPN tunnel.
Surfshark’s CleanWeb feature is supposed to help you avoid ads, trackers, and malware. I tested it on WikiHow, and it eliminated all the ads for me. I like that the adblocker is included in the basic subscription, so you don’t need to pay extra for a separate tool. Other VPNs have an ad blocker, but they usually can’t remove all ads, especially those on YouTube. However, while using Surfshark, I listened to music on YouTube without being jump-scared by salespeople mid-song. I loved it.
By clicking Invisible on LAN, you’ll make yourself undetectable to other devices connected to your network (printers, smart TVs, phones, etc.). For additional security, when switched on, a Rotating IP tool will change your IP address every 5–10 minutes while your server location stays the same.
NoBorders is a feature that allows you to use Surfshark in more restrictive regions like China, Turkey, or Russia. If any firewall is detected, Surfshark automatically enables the NoBorders mode and gives you a list of the most suitable servers for your location. You can also switch it on manually in the app’s settings.
When used with IPv4, Surfshark runs private DNS on every server. This way, the VPN is supposed to block DNS requests your device receives and redirect them through an encrypted tunnel. Since Surfshark is incompatible with IPv6 protocols, please ensure IPv6 is disabled on your device.
For this Surfshark review, I tested over 20 VPN servers for IP, WebRTC, and DNS leaks. My actual IP address was hidden on every server. However, my actual DNS address was visible when I tested Surfshark for leaks while connected to a server in Paris, France. This is a significant flaw for such a popular VPN provider.
I tested the same server later that day, and everything was fine. The DNS leak test on Surfshark’s website didn’t record any leaks the second time I connected to the Paris server.
I also checked many of the VPN’s static IP and MultiHop servers for DNS, IPv4, and WebRTC leaks. The results were fantastic, with zero leaks recorded.
Yes, you can use Surfshark in China. The VPN has several security features that can help you bypass heavy internet restrictions in regions like China, Russia, Turkey, or the UAE. For example, its Camouflage mode obfuscates your VPN traffic and hides that you’re using a VPN, making you more likely to avoid VPN blocks. Additionally, its NoBorders feature is specifically designed for bypassing restrictions and censorship.
Since I could not test the VPN in China, I contacted live chat support to get more information. The agent told me that Surfshark works in highly censored countries. But to be sure the VPN bypasses the Great Firewall, I must use a special connection method. The agent provided instructions in a PDF on manually setting up the connection using OpenVPN GUI, an alternative way of connecting to Surfshark servers.
I followed the instructions and downloaded the OpenVPN GUI on my Windows 10 laptop. The process was easy. Here’s a quick guide on how to do it:
1. Click on the link in the document, which will take you to Surfshark’s manual setup. Log in and click on OpenVPN.
2. Copy the provided credentials and download the location configurations.
3. Go back to the file and click the link to download and install the app.
4. Go to your system tray menu to find OpenVPN GUI. Right-click on the icon and choose Import Files to add configurations.
5. When you can see the server you’ve added, click on Connect.
6. Paste the credentials, and you’re all set up. I tested my connection to see if there were any IP, WebRTC, or DNS leaks, and I was more than happy with the result.
Surfshark is a superb torrent VPN thanks to its P2P-optimized servers, high-grade AES 256-bit encryption, and reliable no-logs policy. Additionally, the automatic kill switch prevents possible IP and data exposure by automatically cutting your connection if any issues occur with your VPN. Your P2P activity will stay private, letting you torrent safely with traffic hidden from your ISP and other third parties.
Surfshark VPN allows P2P activities on all its servers. I contacted customer support to check for any P2P-optimized servers, as I couldn’t find them separated into a list, like the static IP and MultiHop servers. The agent told me I should type P2P in the search bar, and the list will appear. Many top VPNs include lists with P2P-optimized servers, so it would be nice to see something similar with Surfshark.
After searching for “P2P,” my list of servers changed, and I counted 62 regular and virtual servers and 36 static IPs. Here’s the list:
I checked my IP address on a regular server before launching uTorrent. After downloading a movie, I saw that my IP address had changed. This surprised me a bit, so I asked customer support about it. It turns out that the VPN will automatically reroute your traffic through the nearest P2P-optimized server if you’re using a torrent client like uTorrent or BitTorrent. I found this quite helpful since I didn’t have to waste time manually choosing a server to download a movie.
Yes, Surfshark encourages its users to use the VPN and Tor browser. On its website, Surfshark states that using a VPN service along with Tor is considered the most secure internet browsing method.
The Tor browser is popular among journalists and people interested in private and secure browsing. It encrypts users’ data and communications on the Internet and hides their IP addresses and browsing activity by rerouting their traffic multiple times.
If you’re unfamiliar with Tor, Surfshark’s website has a useful 8-minute video guide explaining how the Tor browser works, its drawbacks, and how to use Tor with a VPN. Plus, there’s a quick step-by-step guide on how to set everything up on your device.
Though using Surfshark with Tor offers security advantages, Surfshark warns that you could experience some slowdowns due to double encryption and multiple servers at once.
You can add One bundle to your account for a small fee of $1.49/month, or less on longer plans. It includes an antivirus, an alert tool, and a search tool, among other features. Plus, it’s compatible with both mobile and desktop platforms. I like that you can get all these tools within a single app.
I recommend Surfshark for accessing restricted content. The results were almost perfect after in-depth testing of the VPN’s physical and virtual servers, static IPs, and MultiHop servers. I unblocked every streaming service I tested, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max.

I unblocked almost every Netflix region I tested. Netflix is becoming increasingly VPN-unfriendly and puts great effort into detecting and blocking VPN connections, so I was impressed with this results.

Since I couldn’t unblock Netflix Sweden even after multiple attempts, I will not recommend the VPN if you specifically want this.
Netflix US works on almost every one of Surfshark’s 24 US servers. I could stream in HD without delays or other interruptions. I encountered exceptions with the Buffalo and Dallas servers.
I successfully unblocked Netflix US using Surfshark’s static IPs, as well as its MultiHop servers.
I also accessed Netflix UK without issues. I tested all four VPN servers (London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow) and never experienced an interruption while streaming.
Surfshark VPN unblocks many other European libraries, such as France, Germany, and Spain. I even watched Netflix for Canada, Australia, and Japan.
There are five servers in Australia, but I could only access the Netflix library with the Adelaide server. Also,
I couldn’t unblock Netflix Japan with the regular server, but it worked fine when I connected to one of Surfshark’s static IPs in Japan.
Netflix didn’t block the virtual servers. I watched Troll in HD without issues while connected to one of the Surfshark servers in India.
The only issue I had happened while testing the VPN with Netflix on a server in Switzerland. The site did load, but I was provided content for Columbia instead of a Swiss library.
During my tests with many different servers, Surfshark VPN effectively unblocked Amazon Prime Video. I could stream The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Boys in the highest quality and without delays. I also had a stable connection without buffering while streaming Disney+ and HBO Max.
Surfshark VPN has stable and fast connections. I ran speed tests on over 20 Surfshark servers, including some far away from my location, like Japan, the US, and India.
I tested the regular, virtual, MultiHop, and static servers to see any speed differences. The following is what I focused on:

I measured my base speed before connecting to a Surfshark server.
Surfshark offers a virtual server in my country, so I connected to it first to check if any changes would occur since it’s the exact location. I was surprised to see my download speeds increasing instead of slowing down. My ISP throttles my bandwidth, and Surfshark VPN helped me avoid that.
After that, I connected to Surfshark’s fastest location. I was connected to a server in a nearby country and got an even faster connection. However, my ping increased.
I had excellent speeds on European servers, which increased when I connected to servers in Belgium and Italy.
Although I saw a slight decrease in speeds on UK and German servers, the difference wasn’t noticeable, and I could watch videos of the highest quality without interruptions.
Surfshark increased my speeds even when I was connected to servers overseas. This is great if you like to stream a lot of travel and want to access country-specific content like the popular Netflix US library.
I also tested the efficiency of Surfshark’s virtual servers by connecting them to faraway India. Again, my speed increased, but only by 5%. Having such good speed performance when connecting to remote server locations is a rarity.
Surfshark VPN is fast enough for gaming. I checked my download speed, upload speed, and ping on many servers, and the numbers were always satisfying.
Your ping shouldn’t be above 100 ms if you want to play without interruptions, and ideally, it should stay under 70 ms if you’re a demanding player. A download speed of 20 Mbps is more than enough, while your upload speed should at least be 1 Mbps. Surfshark VPN does the job well most of the time, although sometimes my ping on distant servers was too high for gaming without lag.
When I used the Fastest Server feature, I had excellent speeds. I played Counter-Strike: GO without any problems. I also experienced no lag with the UK, Germany, and Netherlands servers. However, I had some noticeable lag and loading issues when I used servers far from my location (like Australia).
Surfshark VPN covers 100 countries worldwide with a network of 3,200+ servers. Although some VPN services have a much more extensive network (CyberGhost and PIA), Surfshark covers more countries than most VPN providers. Surfshark VPN is special in this area because it can give you an IP address in many Asian, African, and South American countries that are usually overlooked by other VPNs.
The VPN has excellent coverage for the US. It covers 24 locations, so if you’re in the US, you will likely find a VPN server close to your location. Surfshark’s European network of servers is also impressive, covering over 30 countries and multiple cities in places like France, the UK, Germany, and Spain. I also found physical servers in several highly censored countries like the UAE and Turkey. However, there are no servers in China or Russia.
Surfshark’s server infrastructure consists of 100% RAM-only servers. That means the VPN’s entire network uses RAM to operate, so your data won’t get written to a hard drive and will be wiped when the servers restart. This drastically reduces the risk of third-party exposure, as no information can be physically taken from the servers.
Surfshark has virtual servers in many countries. This way, it covers more locations and provides better connection speeds. These servers are also used for countries with tricky internet laws. When picking one of these servers, you’re connecting to a physical server in a nearby location. Virtual locations include Argentina, Chile, Egypt, Monaco, Saudi Arabia, and many more. They are easy to spot in the Surfshark VPN app, labeled with a “v.”

This makes tracking your online data or real IP address almost impossible, which can be useful for journalists or activists who want to keep their work and sources secure.
Surfshark Nexus is an innovation that should set a new VPN standard in the industry. It’s a technology that brings all the VPN’s existing servers into a single global network. With Surfshark Nexus, your traffic gets routed through an entire network of servers to improve overall security and speed and provide you with an enhanced VPN connection.
The Nexus technology introduces three new Surfshark features: IP Rotator, IP Randomizer, and Dynamic MultiHop.
IP Rotator changes your IP address every few minutes while keeping your VPN server location the same. This smart method makes data tracking almost impossible. IP Rotator is easily accessible in the settings menu (above NoBorders mode).
I tried to connect to a static IP server with the IP Rotator turned on to see what would happen. Surfshark informed me that IP rotating was unavailable, but my connection was still secure.
IP Randomizer and Dynamic MultiHop are two unique features that Surfshark has yet to release. IP Randomizer will give you a more private internet connection and enable you to hide your browsing pattern by changing your IP address each time you visit a website.
The Dynamic MultiHop feature, like the VPN’s MultiHop servers, will route your traffic through one country and reroute it through another. However, Dynamic MultiHop offers a significant advantage: It lets you choose where your traffic enters and leaves manually. For example, you can connect to Canada via the US.
Surfshark VPN provides native apps for Windows, Android, iOS, and Mac, which share an almost identical design. Linux is also supported, but Linux users get a more stripped-down app. It still includes OpenVPN and a kill switch. The VPN also supports many smart TVs, including Fire TV and Apple TV, and gaming consoles like Xbox and PlayStation.
Surfshark’s Smart DNS feature allows you to unblock content on devices without VPN support. However, Smart DNS won’t hide your IP or encrypt your data.
The VPN also provides Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox browser extensions. However, these are only proxies that change your IP address. They don’t offer additional features and settings like the Surfshark apps. The extensions do include a malware blocker, though. Later is an example of how easy it is to set up the extension on Google Chrome.
To ensure the security of all devices connected to your home network, you can install Surfshark on your router. You only need to set up a VPN connection on your router once, and it will protect every connected device. It’s an excellent option for protecting devices that don’t have native app support.
Surfshark sells routers that come with Surfshark VPN pre-installed and configured. Before getting one, make sure it works with your internet service provider. I found a great guide on Surfshark’s website with in-depth information on how to pick and install a router.
Surfshark lets you connect and use as many devices as you want concurrently with only one subscription. It can benefit large families, companies, or other places with many users. Most premium VPN providers limit their offer to 5–10 connections per subscription and have more expensive subscription plans simultaneously. That said, IPVanish is a great alternative offering unlimited simultaneous connections.
I never experienced connection issues or drops while simultaneously using multiple devices with different OSs. I streamed in the highest quality on a laptop and downloaded a large file on another computer while actively using my Android and iOS devices.
Downloading, setting up, and using the Surfshark app is straightforward. Regardless of platform, Surfshark provides an intuitive interface. All apps are very similar and come with loads of additional features. Many of those features are customizable to adapt the VPN’s settings to your needs.
I found Surfshark suitable for both beginners and experienced VPN users. It has many advanced features, but they’re all easy to access. Plus, every option has a brief description explaining its function. You can also switch between the light and dark modes and choose from 17 languages.
Surfshark VPN has clean and user-friendly desktop apps. There’s a rectangular Quick Connect button on the right and a list of servers on the left. Many premium VPNs I tested have apps with a big power button and nothing else on the main app window.
While I understand the aim for simplicity and minimalism, I prefer the Surfshark app. I liked that I didn’t need to open another window to find the list of the servers.
The Quick Connect button is customizable. In the VPN settings, you can personalize it, like always connecting to a server of your choice. You can also always connect to the fastest location or the nearest country.
The server list is separated into Locations, Static IP, and MultiHop. Each one provides you with speed metrics.
Click the small refresh icon to see the latency (ping) and server load. Note that metrics change, so you should refresh before picking a server if performance matters for your activities.
Downloading and setting up Surfshark is very easy. Here’s how:
1. Go to Surfshark’s website, click Get Surfshark, and a checkout window appears. Choose one of the subscription options. I picked the shortest one-month plan since I wanted to test the VPN, but the savings are most significant if you choose the longest plan.
2. Surfshark will then offer you the One bundle that includes:

3. Click “Add and Continue” or “Continue without bundle” to move on.
4. Choose your payment method and click on “Complete purchase.”
5. Create your Surfshark password.
6. Click “Download for Windows” or the button for whichever device you use.
7. Surfshark will launch the app, and after logging in, you’ll be ready to browse, stream, and download in complete privacy.
Surfshark offers easy-to-use mobile apps. I liked that they’re very similar to the desktop clients. The mobile apps also provide additional features, like Android’s IKEv2 protocol and GPS spoofing. Some VPNs have mobile apps entirely different from their desktop counterparts, so you may not feel like using the same VPN provider.
While testing the mobile apps, I found that Surfshark’s iOS app lacks the Bypasser tool (split tunneling). However, it’s easy to find for Android in the VPN settings. This isn’t a surprise, as most VPNs have straightforward iOS apps. Some don’t even include a kill switch.
Android and iOS apps provide WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 protocols and features like the kill switch, CleanWeb, and NoBorders mode.
On its Android app, Surfshark offers a GPS spoofing feature called “Override GPS location.” When enabled, your device’s GPS location is changed to match the server location you’re connected to. The feature is easy to find—go to the VPN’s settings, then advanced settings, and select “Override GPS location.”
GPS spoofing can be especially useful if you want to use apps that work only in specific countries or hide your GPS location from other apps on your device. Also, don’t forget to turn it off when using apps that require your physical location, like Uber.

Surfshark VPN also has a fully functional system tray icon. By clicking on the white arrow at the right end of your toolbar, you’ll find a gray Surfshark icon, which you can drag to your toolbar for easier access. Click on it, and the mini mode will appear. It consists of a Quick Connect button (which you can expand to a list of servers) and a Personalize option below, which you can use to add shortcuts to your dashboard.
Surfshark offers a 7-day free trial for Android and iOS via the respective app stores. The trial version comes with all the features of the paid app. Although you must enter your payment information, you won’t get charged if you cancel your subscription before the trial ends. I could use the VPN for 7 days on my Android and iPhone without issues.
Surfshark supports various payment methods. In addition to the most common methods (credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal), you can use services like Google Pay and Amazon Pay and other popular methods like Alipay. Cryptocurrencies are also supported, so you can create a new email before subscribing to Surfshark and pay with crypto to stay completely anonymous.
Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee regardless of the subscription plan you choose. I had enough time to test all the VPN’s features during this period. The 30-day period is the industry standard, but some VPNs offer longer money-back periods, like CyberGhost (45 days).
Since I wanted to test the money-back guarantee, I contacted the live chat support and asked for a refund. The agent didn’t pressure me to keep the subscription, but they did ask me why I wanted to cancel and be refunded and whether there were any issues. I told him I no longer needed the VPN, and he immediately approved my request. I received a refund in my bank account in two business days.
The Surfshark VPN website is well-designed, has a very helpful knowledge base, and has an FAQ section. It also has detailed installation guides and video tutorials, so if you’re new to VPNs, there’s plenty of learning material. Surfshark’s customer support is available via live chat, email, and a ticketing system. You get professional help with each option, but I prefer the live chat because of the immediate response.
Surfshark’s live chat is available 24/7 and easily accessible on its website. After starting a chat, a bot will provide some of the FAQs, but if you don’t find the automated replies helpful, you can immediately switch to a real agent.
